1. Introduction
Smart Locator Inspector is a Chrome extension designed for developers and QA engineers to inspect webpage elements, evaluate locator strategies, test selectors, record browser interactions, and generate automation code for Playwright, Selenium, and Cypress.
This Privacy Policy explains what information the extension accesses, how it is used, where it is stored, and what choices users have when using the extension.
2. Information the Extension Accesses
Depending on the features you use, Smart Locator Inspector may access or process:
- Website content: DOM structure, HTML fragments, element attributes, labels, roles, placeholders, and visible text needed for element inspection and locator generation.
- Website URLs: Page URLs associated with inspection history and recorded navigation steps.
- Recorded interactions: Clicks, keyboard interactions, form changes, navigation, file-upload filenames, and supported browser dialog information.
- Form values: Values typed into fields while recording browser interactions. These may include names, email addresses, passwords, or other information entered on a webpage.
- Automation assets: Generated locators, Page Objects, test files, Smart Methods, saved recordings, and runtime test data.
- Extension preferences: Settings, recording preferences, and recent locator history.
The information accessed depends on the pages you use and the features you activate. Webpages may contain personal, confidential, or sensitive information.
Use the extension only on websites and information you are authorized to test.
3. How Information Is Used
The extension uses accessed information to provide its functionality, including:
- Inspecting webpage elements and displaying their attributes and DOM context.
- Generating, ranking, and testing locator strategies.
- Recording browser interactions and generating automation code.
- Creating reusable Smart Methods and Page Objects.
- Saving and reopening supported workspace items.
- Maintaining extension preferences and recent locator history.
Information is used to provide the extension's user-facing functionality and is not sold for advertising or data-broker purposes.
4. Local Storage
Smart Locator Inspector uses Chrome's local extension storage, chrome.storage.local, for supported workspace information.
Depending on the features used, stored information may include:
- Saved Smart Methods and generated code.
- Recorded browser interactions and recording sessions.
- Recorder settings and extension preferences.
- Recent locator history, including associated page URLs and locator strings.
- Runtime test data and environment-variable mappings.
The audited implementation stores recent locator history with a limit of 50 entries. Other workspace information may remain stored until you delete it or remove the extension.
Local storage does not automatically mean that the information is free of sensitive content. Review recordings and generated files before sharing or exporting them.
5. Recording and Sensitive Information
When browser recording is enabled, the extension can record interaction data needed to generate automation scripts.
Depending on the interaction, recorded data may include values typed into form fields, including password fields. Do not record real passwords, authentication tokens, payment information, or other sensitive values unless necessary for an authorized test.
Environment-variable features can help separate test configuration from generated test code. However, in the audited implementation, generated .env files may contain literal values mapped during recording, including sensitive values.
Review generated files before downloading, sharing, or committing them to a source-code repository. Use synthetic test data wherever possible.
6. External Services and Data Sharing
The audited repository did not contain code that transmitted inspected webpage content or recorded interaction data to a developer-operated backend, AI service, or analytics provider.
The extension popup may request font resources from Google Fonts when opened. This is a third-party network request and may expose technical connection information to that provider.
The extension does not sell inspected webpage content for advertising or data-broker purposes.
These statements apply only to the audited implementation. If a release introduces AI integrations, backend services, analytics, or other external data transfers, this policy must be updated before that release is distributed.
7. Exports and Clipboard
The extension can generate automation files and copy locators or code to the clipboard.
Once you copy or download information, you control where it is stored and with whom it is shared. Exported files may contain URLs, recorded values, test data, or other information from your testing session.
Review exports before sharing them.
8. Retention and Deletion
Information stored by the extension remains in local browser storage until it is deleted through the available workspace controls, cleared through Chrome's extension storage settings, or removed as part of uninstalling the extension.
You can use the extension's available controls to discard recordings and delete saved Smart Methods or workspace items.
Downloaded files and clipboard copies are separate from extension storage and may need to be deleted independently.
9. Permissions and Website Access
Smart Locator Inspector uses browser permissions to provide its inspection, recording, scripting, and local workspace functionality.
The audited implementation uses the storage, activeTab, and scripting permissions, along with website host access needed to run the extension on supported testing pages.
The extension's content scripts operate on matched webpages to support element inspection and recording. The exact permissions and host-access configuration are defined by the manifest distributed with the installed version.
10. Chrome Web Store User Data Policy
Smart Locator Inspector handles information accessed through Chrome APIs and webpages in accordance with the applicable Chrome Web Store Developer Program Policies and User Data Policy, including Limited Use requirements.
Information is used for the disclosed functionality of the extension. It is not sold for advertising or data-broker purposes or used for unrelated purposes.

11. Children's Privacy
Smart Locator Inspector is a developer and test-automation tool and is not designed specifically for children.
12. Changes to This Policy
This Privacy Policy may be updated when the extension's functionality, permissions, or data-handling practices change. The effective date at the top of this page will be updated when appropriate.
